Night Shift Oostende

Night Shift is an endless swirl of interventions and experiments, allowing each action to leave behind a unique trace and stimulating crossovers to trigger the unexpected. For this edition Gouvernement and close collaborator Decoratelier invite an unlikely assemblage of artists to head to the seaside and construct a space for generously researching, sharing and showing.

For Night Shift Oostende, Wendy created the mermaid song, a musical performance about reclaiming the concept of the mermaid as a more inclusive and radical person instead of the Disney one, ready to give up her legs for a rich man.

The luring spirit of the old sirens was prolongued in the form of a merch stand opening right after the performance. The stand was a big shell, the house of the merchmate Maya Strobbe. In it, people could buy selfmade pearl necklaces with or without quotes from the lyrics of Wendy. The currency was shells, given away at other places on site.

The music and scenography were imagined, composed and built during the preceding residency. The merchmate concept was designed and built in collaboration with Maya Strobbe. The backdrop was previously designed in collaboration with Veronika Bezdenejnykh.
